Singing Water Vineyards

Singing Water Vineyards is a beautiful Texas Hill Country winery near Bruins Creek. This winery offers tours, tastings, and live music events.

They’ve got a large property full of plenty of places to enjoy a relaxing winery experience. There’s a cozy indoor tasting room, a shady outdoor patio, a little deck that overlooks water, and a pavilion for private events.

Visitors can choose to enjoy the regular tasting either indoors or outdoors on the patio. Guests who want novel tasting experiences can choose the “Top of the Hill” Private Picnic. This romantic picnic  includes gourmet sandwiches, homemade cookies, fresh fruit, and wine (of course). The picnic areas overlook this winery’s beautiful scenic grounds.

This veteran-owned winery is also civic minded; they regularly donate to a veteran non-profit.

A regular tasting costs $30 per person and includes a flight of five wines. Singing Water Vineyards is open Thursday through Sunday from 12-6 PM. The winery is closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Newsom Vineyards

Since its establishment in 1986, Newsom Vineyards has sought to make great wine from the highest quality grapes in the Texas High Plains.

They’ve been selling grapes to other Texas wineries for decades. And, under owner Nolan Newsom, the winery remains among the well-known High Plains growers.

The Newsom Vineyards tasting room is located in the heart of Comfort in a refurbished historic home. The tasting room is warm and inviting thanks to wood panels that cover the floors, walls, and bar area. There’s also a patio in their Comfort backyard where you can enjoy a glass of wine.

Newsom Vineyards is open Monday through Friday from 2-6 PM. On Saturday they’re open from 10 AM to 7 PM. Sundays they’re open from 12-7 PM.

Bending Branch Winery

Bending Branch Winery is located in the heart of Comfort’s historic district.

Head of winemaking is Robert W. Young, a former physician who enrolled in the respected Winemaker Certification Program at UC Davis. Bob’s pursuit of “Next World Wines” has earned Bending Branch Winery multiple accolades.

In 2023, Bending Branch Winery earned the “Best Winery” award in the San Antonio Express-News Readers’ Choice Awards for the eighth consecutive year. Their award-winning bold but balanced red wines begin with grapes such as Texas Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Mourvèdre. White wines include grapes such as Petit Manseng and Picpoul Blanc.

Bending Branch Winery is open Thursday through Monday from 12-6 PM. They’re closed Tuesday and Wednesday. You can make a reservation via the Bending Branch Winery Tock profile. A wine tasting costs $30 per person and includes a taste of five wines.

The Young Family portfolio also includes a Bourbon whisky company called Bending Branch 1840. You can also enjoy a Bourbon flight at the winery.

Ursa at Branch on High

Ursa Vineyards is related to Bending Branch Winery. They’re both part of the Young Family portfolio.

This winery is actually based in the Sierra Foothills of California. But its tasting room is located on High St. in downtown Comfort, Texas. Also, the tasting room in Comfort is not called Ursa Vineyards; it’s called Ursa at Branch On High. Just wanted to clarify the name.

Ursa Vineyards works with well-known grapes such as Pinot Noir, Malbec, Viognier, and Chardonnay. They also work with less common varieties like Tannat, Mencía, and Alicante Bouschet.

Ursa Winemaker Deborah Elissagaray takes inspiration from her family’s Basque heritage. Her father’s side of the family has roots in the Basque Country of southwestern France. This influence appears in Ursa wines like the Iberian Blend, the Basque Blend, and the Ardo Zuria (which means “white wine” in the Basque language).

The Ursa Vineyards tasting room in Comfort is open from 12-8 PM Thursday through Saturday. On Sunday they’re open from 12-6 PM.

Ursa at Branch On High serves wine from both Ursa Vineyards and Bending Branch Winery. A flight of five Ursa wines costs $30 per person.
